AD, ATTRITION AND HUMAN RESOURCE

“Wanted degree holders as HR officers for an MNC with operations in India and abroad” – don’t worry! This is not an Ad that the author of this blog has published; rather this is an indication of the sorry stature of an MNC which has placed such a worthless and meaningless Advertisement.

Human Resource is one of the most important functions in a Company. HR has got to play the most important and defining roles in the growth of the company by contributing to the growth of its employees. Human Resource, as the name implies, deals with the manual labor. HR should vociferously take a stand for the employee and shall promote his well being, thereby assuring employee satisfaction, loyalty and integrity.

There are numerous young graduates who take up HR stream during the course of their Business studies and most of them have a very funny and disheartening reason for this choice. I have come across many graduates who feel that Human resource department has no job other than keeping track of the routine and rather facile tasks related to employee management. This choice is many peoples idea of a tension free job that pays handsomely. Nothing could be and much farther from the truth. The importance of HR is so paramount that it may in some cases decide the fate of the Company.

The fingers are pointed at the HR when the employee attrition rates become high. This, in the majority of cases, is a direct pointer and a measure of HR ability and worthiness. In most cases this inability can be attributed to the non competency of the Human Resource Team. This non competency, in turn can be attributed to the lack of quality human resource training and in some pathetic cases, lack of the top management’s views in regard to the appointment of human resource people. A classic example is the advertisement that this blog starts with. Most of the so called multi national companies do not take much time or heart when it comes to the selection of qualified people for the human resource department, resulting in employee dissatisfaction. This dissatisfaction when left to brew for some time froths over and results, inevitably in brain and skill drain.

There are exceptions and these exceptions are today’s most successful companies. These companies have elaborate screening procedures when selecting the candidates for the various positions in the human resource. The qualified and competent candidates are then taken through an elaborate training procedure where these future employees get to know about the operations of the Company, its people and culture.

Human Resource might not be able to quantify the results of their efforts in terms of turnover and profits like the other departments, rather these efforts materializes in terms of employee wellbeing, happiness, integrity, loyalty, efficiency and the much sought out but seldom perceived bonhomie.
