KILL THE CLUTTER
Desktop - the unassuming name for
the start up screen of millions and millions of computers all over the world. I
have even heard people calling the welcome screen on a Tablet PC a desktop - as
outrageous as it may sound, it happens.
As an application engineer,
travelling around, meeting people, I always get an opportunity to peek into the
other guy's computer - be it to read some specifications, to get a company
presentation or sometimes even to make friends on Face book and connect on
Linked In. And the ubiquitous fact is that almost all of those desktop's are cluttered
- with excel and word files, engineering drawings, MP3 files, photos from the
company outings, copies of e-mails, weather updates and other menial stuff. I
have had instances where the people looking for something on their desktops
were unable to find it and excusing themselves with an embarrassed smile - "I
need to clean up my desktop". This is easier said than done. The poor
desktop is always the garbage dump; even the evil grin from the recycle bin sitting
pretty on top of a desktop is not sufficient for the obtuse to try and give the
intended garbage dump, its share.
You can find lots of tricks and
mapping methods out there to clean up your desktop and from the experiences
that I have had, these are not working - period. If you are a structured guy
with a strict structured upbringing, it is possible that your desktop might
reflect some of your refinement. But most of us are not structured, we tend to
take things as they come and leave it on the desktop.
The first thing that you see in
office is your desktop, keeping it uncluttered can give you a shot of positive energy.
You can deceive yourself into thinking that you are structured, even if you are
not. How to do this? It is very simple, keep a folder on the desktop, name it
whatever you like, I have christened mine “TEMP” and dump all the files you
work with, in here. After finishing your work move the files to a more secure
location deep inside your HDD, somewhere far away from your desktop. Delete all
the program short cuts from your desktop and pin the regular-use ones to your
task bar. Use your Recycle Bin – let the waste manager manage some waste for
you.
Last but not the least, select a
wall paper with which you can closely associate yourselves and will give you
that sunny side up smile whole throughout the day!
And as for me – I am a walk the talk guy. This screenshot from my desktop is a sure proof, isn't it?
