NEW YEAR - 2012 JANUARY 13
2012 – The New Year dawned on us 13 days late. The entire world was celebrating the feast and the joy of the new year on 31st December and we might have been the only exception in the whole beautiful world. It is a very good feeling to know that you are different from the mass, you might stick out like a sore thumb, but still you will stick out.
We guys decided to celebrate our new year a little late – 13 days late in the beautiful state of Goa, the tiny state bordering the Arabian sea. We had great many plans, and we had two days. We charted carefully the best beaches in North Goa, the best in the south. We had in mind the Se Cathedral, the Old Goa, the forts, the pubs and the vibrant night life of Panaji. We landed in Goa on an evening and decided to head out to Colva beach as it was the nearest to the railway station. We checked into a small but good hotel.
That night we had a candle light dinner out on the beach. It was one of the most memorable experiences that we had - the cool evening breeze blowing around, the waves breaking gently on the shore, the great sea food and the variety of the spirits that you had around. One of those varieties captured my imagination, and later my consciousness too. It was the Long island beach tea. A special, strong cocktail made out of five white spirits. It was so special, a little heady and a perfect match to the spicy Goan sea food. We tasted little bits of everything.
The next day we had a trip around to North Goa. We had a very tight schedule and we stuck to it like anything. Vagator, Fort Aguda and Baga were the highlights of that day. Lots of Budweisers, Tuborgs and sea food found their way into our stomachs. It was late into the night when we got back, and it was that evening we were introduced to the local flavor – the world famous Fenny. The spirit of all spirits, something that we Indian’s can call our own. Like the Scotts have their Scotch, the Mexicans the Tequila, the French the Sauvignon Blanc, the Burgundy and the Champagne, the Indians can proudly say we have the Fenny. It’s not as savvy as the Scotch or do not have the finesse of a Sauvignon, but still it is a patented brand under which we found our Solace for the rest of our stay in Goa. Gone with the wind was the plan, the well laid out plan. We still had the Cathedrals and the forts to visit, but the Fenny held us in its wonderful warmth and camaraderie.
Before we realized, it was the time to take the train back home. Our Goan new year came to an abrupt end on the beaches of Colva. But we promised our selves we would be back soon, to re live the experience and to complete the interrupted itinerary, hopefully.
