WHEEL OF TIME
Poetic justice – two seemingly inconspicuous words- two words that everyone reads and forgets as soon. But it held another opportunity for me and my blog. I decided to write a poem. It was very difficult for me to decide on a theme, and pat came the idea; it was the old grandfather clock that helped me – the nine chimes was the most wonderful sound that was there for my ears. Time. It was on time that I was going to write. It was then another roadblock appeared. Was it to be a Carpe Diem, a Terza Rima, a Quatrain, a couplet or a sonnet? Sonnet held more fascination for me as it was the preferred form of the poetry used by my favorites – Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde. Some body once said India is a country of road blocks. It seemed to me that the spurious foreigner at last might be true: A good sonnet has to have 14 lines and have to follow very stringent rhyming. The word Sonnet is derived from the Italian word Sonnetto and the Occitan word Sonet, meaning little song.
I was at loss; I am a Sales Engineer and not a poet. If asked I could design in jiffy a transformer, I can find an answer to a complex third order differential equation. But to write a sonnet and that too in a way worthy of my idols, it was a daunting and Herculean task. I decided upon the Sonnet at last and sat down to write. The poem turned out to be an odd mixture of Quatrain, Sonnet and Rhyme type of poetry, at times slipping to free verse, not if Cacophony.
And at last I made it – whatever might be the out come. Joe Speak has begun to sing.
“Wheel of Time”
Wheel of time turns too fast
Nothing here prolonged to last
Looking back, sight yourselves
Seeing void, infinite darkness
Forward goes the wheel of time
Helpless, despair shows life mime
Robs your nights and sleep itself
Keeps you down and wounds the self
Time goes by, and Bessler’s wheel
Perpetual and life is a reel
Goes too fast, and at 24 frames
Ain’t it fast? Ashes and flames
Flight of time, the time machine
Wells and science, polish and sheen
Alas! The dreams, shattered not fair
Mistake is mine, castles on air
